Do you think the current rules in the NFL protecting Quarterbacks and Receivers is ruining the game?

Look back even 10-15 years ago. The greats like Dan Marino, John Elway, Steve Young....what were there stats like. A good year for any of them during that time period would consist of stats of 55-60% completion, 3500+yards, 22+ touchdowns, and 14 or less interceptions. These were the greats of that era. Now look at todays top Quarterbacks, Of course Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will always have great stats no matter what the rules and regulations are because they are that good, but take a look at some of the other top qb's. Kyle Orton is a smart quarterback with above average accuracy and mediocre arm strength who can become panicked if his first two reads are covered. He is leading the NFL at this moment in passing yards. Drew Brees is a more accurate than Orton, but otherwise is actually a mediocre QB in terms of skill set as well. Joe Flacco is Ok, Mark Sanchez is OK, Matt Ryan is OK..... so why are they among the top of the nfl in stats? Take a look at around 2003-2006 and take notice of the drastic increase in QB production in that time frame and beyond into the current day. The current rules have had an amazing effect in a league where ok qb's have been gift wrapped an average of 10-15 qb rating points. Again, a good year for John Elway would have been with a rating of 85-90. if that was the case today, Elway would be out of a job. Now think backwards with the current talent. Put Kyle Orton in the 90's and he would never be given a starting job becasue with the rules of that time, DB's could bump and grind and smash receivers all day long and given Orton's arm strength, he would never be able to consistently get the throws in on time or accurate enough to be an effective QB.

Even putting someone like Manning back into the era of Marino, Elway and Young, and his stats would drop to around the previously mentioned range at the beggining of this Article. What I want to know is, does anyone else think that the current rules are alowing mediocrity to become the standard instead of weeding the weak out?

Do you consider Reggie Bush a bust (Saints fans not need answer I know your love for Bush is endless)?

I do not think so, sure his stats are umm pedestrian to put it nicely, but look at what he brings to the Saints, coming out the back field nobody can cover him even the best DBs have trouble with him.
If Brees hits Bush in open field hes gone pretty much a guaranteed TD or a huge gain. Running the ball, sure he doesn't gain a lot of yards on average,but if he can beat the corners and linebackers around the edge it usually results in a 1st down or better. Lined up in the slot hes a nightmare for the defense and a extremely potent weapon in the passing game, and Reggie Bush and Drew Brees go together like PB&J.
So do you think he is a bust if so why? If ever seen a Saints game you know Bush may not be the best at his position but he makes some of the most explosive plays in he NFL today.

He has had a solid career, but he was supposed to be the next Barry Sanders when NO drafted him out of USC.

It's not that they want to pad Drew's stats but rather they rely too much on the passing game which has become along with their lack of a good run defense their downfall. Our passing game has won us many games and helped us make comebacks. The playcallers/playmakers seem a little unsure about using our run game more effectively.

QBs generally score more fantasy points then any other position; That's why most leagues give passing TDs 2 less points then rushing+reieving TDs..So,even like Eli Manning scored more fantasy points then Andre Johnson.Players are NOT ranked soley by fantasy points,if that were the case,
then 8 QBs would be ranked 1st rounders in every league!

Fantasy rankings take into consideration that you are trying to build a complete team,so that's what makes taking a Roddy White,or a Cedric Benson in the 3rd round smarter then taking Eli Manning; Even though Eli scored more fantasy points then them last year.

I have been depressed for a about 5 years now. I just graduated school and I'm in community college. Girls liked me in school but I never had the confidence to ask them out or even talk to them. This girl liked me for over a year. When I finally got her number she text me for a month then suddenly stop.when we were texting I asked her to chill and she said sure!!!! Why did you wait so long to ask.she also told me to send her a pic of myself. I later saw that she was goin with Someone else on Facebook .then I found out that she broke up with him. I am very sad about this. I didnt think she was that kind of girl who still talks to her exes like she still likes him.I also texted her many times and asks if she could let me know if we were still cool and she never responded. I even called her to . But anyway I have a birthmark like drew brees on the side of my face. Even though girls liked me I still couldn't talk to them . I know I am not important to the girl but it is hard to let her go. I liked her but I knew that she had issues with dudes. When I got her number she seemed hesitant to give it to me. After waiting I called her and she didn't answer. I am aware that I might be a 40 year old virgin. I am not that smart and do not know why I went to college in the first place. Even though she doesn't like me anymore I think I should of asked her out when she first liked me. I didn't want to ask her out I just wanted to chill with her and do things with her. The reason I am so sad is because I have no social life anymore like I used to. I am scared to go to parties, fair, etc. I am 18 years old and still a virgin. Ok, what you have to do to get over this girl and be in a position to move on from her is treat it like getting over an addiction.

It is unhelpful to suggest you go cold turkey on her because it just wouldn't happen. So, my advice would be train your mind to go without thinking about her for an hour.

Then later that day try another hour hour. Each time you try make sure you manage to succeed. Make a note of how many hours you succeeded. Eventually you will manage to get over her this way..providing you actually WANT to get over her, that's the first step admitting that you want to.

It has to be D or E only because the others have almost no chance of happening. Brees year last year happens once in a career. ANYTHING can happen to change stats. Don't expect last years remarkable chase of Marino's record to happen again. The Chargers will make the playoffs only because they play in the worst division in the NFL. They will exit the playoffs quickly enough. The Patriots have to fend off the Bills and Dolphins, and Brady has to prove he can handle coming back from his injury. T.O. Hasn't shown any signs of implosion, but he is unpredictable. The Steelers defense can help a lot, but that offense can lose games during the season. It's always tough to repeat.

There are question marks with all A-E. Personally, I don't think any will actually happen.

Why don't NFL teams put their second string guys in when they have a huge lead in the 4th quarter?

I am currently watching (recorded) the Saints clobber the Giants... it's 42-24 with like 5 minutes left and Drew Brees as well as other starters are in the game still trying to pad their stats. I'm a competitor too but take your quarterback out and let the second string guy get some real time reps... How many times have we seen backup quarterbacks take over for an injured guy and has had no real game time..

And most NFL coaches are paranoid and few would consider an 18 or 21 point lead safe with 5 minutes remaining in the game. NFL offenses can score quickly and coaches generally want to have their best players, especially at key positions, in the game.

Huge blowouts are rare in the NFL but when they do occur you do sometimes see coaches play their backups for the final 8 or 10 minutes of a game. That's usually about the same time that TV networks switch over to closer games that might be going on at the same time.

Since a team has 46 active players on game day, with the exception of the backup QB, most of them are on the field some during the normal course of a game. Guys that don't start make up the bulk of the special teams so they can be on the field a lot.

Backup LBs and DBs get into the game at various times because of the multiple defensive sets, ie, nickle and dime packages, the teams play these days.

And, a lot of substitution goes on that you don't notice that much for plays from the line of scrimmage. Backup OL and DL players often go in for a few plays to give the starters a brief rest. For example, a team might have 6 active DL guys, and they often will rotate backups into the game, usually one at a time.

But 2 positions you rarely see substituted are the center and the QB. That's because the snap of the ball is of utmost importance and changing those guys out is a risk that coaches seldom take. A lot of turnovers occur when there are bungled snaps.

Backup centers usually play other OL positions and often get into the game at guard or tackle. But the starting center generally plays every offensive snap.

Most NFL coaches state publicly that they have a lot of confidence in their backup QBs and their ability to run the offenses if need be. But even the coaches that aren't blatantly lying about their backup QBs generally want to keep their starter in the game. Coaches tend to stay with the guys they trust the most.

Now and then, you do see a backup QB go into the game to run out the clock when there are 2 minutes or less left to play. But even that has become rare in the NFL today.

And, you're right about backup QBs taking over for injured starters and stinking up the joint. Teams like the Texans and Bears were considered serious playoff and even Super Bowl contenders this season but without their starting QBs, their odds have changed dramatically.

And, it's not just untested rookies and career backup QBs that can disappoint. Back in 2008, the Cowboys were one of the top favorites to go to the Super Bowl. They were 4-1 when Romo went down with an injury. Brad Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with the Bucs, starts for the next 4 games and plays so badly the Cowboys were lucky to win one of those.

Romo returned a couple of weeks too soon and didn't play much better. The Cowboys ended up 9-7 and did not make the playoffs.

Who would you say the best active QB in the NFL is?

A lot of people have it down to Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. These two quarterbacks do put up incredible stats, but any real sports fan will say that stats don't tell the whole story. Both Green Bay and New England have Pro Bowl caliber players at other positions. And both Green Bay and New England were successful in years shortly before these QBs were drafted. I'm not belittling what these quarterbacks have done. I would still have them at #2 & #3 easily. But they owe some thanks to the players around them for such incredible stats.

But what about Drew Brees? I don't think any quarterback in the league has done as much for his team as Drew Brees has done for the Saints. In his first year in New Orleans, he took the last year's second worst team to the NFC Championship game. Then three years later, he led them to a 13-3 season and a Super Bowl victory over the 14-2 Colts (Saints went 13-0 and lost last three games, Colts went 14-0 and lost last two games). He set the NFL's record for highest completion rate in a season (70.62%) and gave four different receivers 100+ yard games. And that 2009 Saints team had zero Pro Bowl receivers for that year, and only one receiver with past Pro Bowl awards, a past-his-prime Jeremy Shockey (two if you count Reggie Bush).

So that's (part of) my case for Drew Brees. Who do you think is the best? (You can throw Peyton Manning into the mix if you really want to, even though he hasn't played this year)
I think the Tom Brady - New England Patriots is the best QB - team combo in the NFL. But I think without the Patriots system, people would start to think he was more of a #2 or #3. But Drew Brees has shown that he can go to a bad team and immediately be in the discussion for best QB in the league. That's why I have Brees over Brady.

Yeah, I know, Grossman had alot of help from the Defense and Devin Hester, but still. Philip Rivers had alot of help from You All Know Who. It seems like when hes bad, boy is he bad, but when hes good, the stats speak for themselves.

MVP- Co-MVP's Peyton Manning and Drew Brees- Both teams are 8-0 and their stats are almost identical. How can you chose one over the other.

Def MVP- Pat Willis- I'm a Titans fan living in TN and I see every game. Chris Johnson's speed blows everyone away chasing him. Willis actually ran him down on the sideline and he's 240 pounds!

Rookie of the Year- Percy Harvin- Quickly turning into one of the most dynamic players in the league with recieving, returning, and offensive abilities.

Coach of the Year- Marvin Lewis- Bengals were one of the leagues worst. This season they are one of the leagues best.

NFL: Why are Ravens fans dying to get rid of Joe Flacco?

Please! You guys are delusional and spoiled with good management. I like the Ravens, and I believe the main problem with Baltimore is Cam Cameron with his terrible playcalling and scheme. If you have a good RB and FB(Rice and Leach) on your roster, utilize them! Especially if you have a WR(2 if Lee Evans is healthy) that stretches the field.

You guys are ******* stupid if you want Flacco gone. About 10-15 other teams would go in a bidding war for him! You guys are just using him wrong. He is not meant to throw the football 50 times every game! Look at his stats the first three years. He is a solid starting QB. He just needs a run game, just like a majority of other QB's in the NFL not named Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers(and Drew Brees for that matter).

Look at teams who run the West Coast offense. Even they do not pass the ball as much as Flacco is being forced to! So calm down.

I'm not a Saints fan...I'm from Minnesota so I'm still a little bummed about the Saints beating "my team", but I was cheering for New Orleans today. So, I'll start with a big CONGRATULATIONS!!! to New Orleans and all of Louisiana for a great win!!

My question is a simple one, and I guess curiosity may be getting the best of me, but I was wondering if anyone knows what the scar is on the right cheek of Drew Brees.

It is the scar left from the removal of a birth mark he had there. The birth mark was a little furry thing that looked like he had a little caterpillar on his face. All during his high school and college days, he said it did not bother him, so he left it. This was partly because the technology to remove it would leave a large permanent scar.
With new technology (which of course he can afford) he decided to have it removed - it will now only leave a minimal scar, which may disappear over time.

He used to have a large mole or birthmark on it when he played with Purdue and San Diego. He must have had it removed and it left that scar. I don't know this for fact, but I do know it used to be a large, oval shaped mole (or birthmark) and now its a big scar.
